Don’t eat the toothpaste!

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Last evening we sent the kids to bed. Calvin was being especially quiet. Charity went to check on them and found a half eaten tube of Toothpaste with Fluoride in Calvin’s bed. We didn’t think too much of it at the time. We took it and off to bed he went. Then 2:00 am hit. Charity heard Calvin screaming. She checked on him. I was awoken a couple of minutes later. Calvin was vomiting (emesis according to the doctor). It was pretty crazy. His stomach was going nuts! We felt terrible for him. I think he was more scared than anything. Charity (who is much quicker than I) placed 2 and 2 together and figured out that it was from the toothpaste he ate. We figured he got it all out of his system so he should be fine. He slept fine the rest of the evening.

In the morning we had a doctor appointment for Oliver. While there we mentioned it to the Doctor. She had a nurse call the Poison Control Center. We had to call them back when we got home to give them specifics about the toothpaste to see if he had a toxic level of the fluoride in him. He didn’t, luckily. She said to give him some Milk so it binds to the fluoride and his body doesn’t absorb it.

I remember being told not to eat the toothpaste, but never really thought too much about it. I guess there is something to that. I know it’s the fluoride that was in it that was the real problem but still, don’t eat the toothpaste!

Fall Fun at Rib Mountain

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Since I’ve been playing Mr. Mom these past 2 days I really wanted to get Ella and Calvin away from the TV. Yesterday Ella watched TV all morning, then I took her and Calvin to a park and then they watched TV right up until our Family Home Evening activities which began around 6pm. Today I was bound and determined to complete my Motherly duties early enough so I could get them outside before noon. I made it, just barely, but I made it. At 11:00 Ella, Calvin and I trekked over to Rib Mountain. That’s our huge ski mountain in Wausau (I use the term “huge” loosely) for those of you not familiar with it. Here are some fun pictures of the kids at Rib. We really did have a good time and they didn’t watch much TV today!! I’m still nowhere near as good at the Mom thing as Charity is (I think it’s an impossibility).

It was a beautiful fall day in Wausau. The temp was around 50 degrees Fahrenheit and very sunny! This was taken from the van while driving up the entrance to the park.

I wanted to get some scenic pictures, so I laid down on the ground and took a picture of a tree. I think it turned out nice.

The kids looked at me like I was crazy!

Then they thought it would be fun too!

Monty has school tomorrow but is off on Thursday and Friday. I am trying to think of something fun to do with him, Ella and Calvin on one of those days.

Tomorrow Oliver has his 1st doctors appointment. No shots I believe, so it should be pretty harmless. It will be the 1st time we have taken him out since leaving the hospital. It will be his first time riding in our van!!!

Funny Stories

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

So we have a couple of amusing stories to share since Oliver was born.  By the way, Charity and Oliver are still in the hospital.  They will both be getting out on Sunday.  Everything is going great so far!  A BIG THANKS to all who have helped us out, visited Charity, brought gifts and been keeping us in their thoughts and prayers!  We greatly appreciate it.  Now the stories.

Shortly after Oliver was born I called the kids from the nursery to tell them about Oliver.  My mom handed the phone to Monty right away.  The conversation began with me asking (while crying mind you) “Do you want to know it’s name?”

Monty said “Yes!”.

I replied “It’s Oliver Michael”.

Monty then asked the most pointed question, “Is it a boy or a girl?”.

To which I replied, “It’s a boy!”.

He then affirmed what we knew all along, “Awwwwwh, I wanted a girl!”.

He handed the phone to Ella.  Ella immediatey asked “Daddy?  Boy or Girl?”.

She got her answer and let me go, “Bye Daddy!”.

Now I can’t remember the other story, so it will have to wait.  I’ll post it once I remember (that means ask Charity).

Introducing Oliver Michael Gasall!

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Well, it happened this morning! Oliver was born. He weighed in at 8 lbs 10 1/2 oz. It was a pretty exciting and emotional day for the entire family. He joined this world at 8:03 this morning. He was 20 inches long. Our first impression is that he looks a lot like Calvin. We were completely shocked that it was a boy, but very excited! As I promised many, here are a few pictures of Oliver. Mom and Oliver are doing quite well. Mom is still a bit drowsy and worn out but all is well. In case you are wondering we got like no sleep last night. We tried to go to bed around 11. I was up until 1 making sure I have a blank tape for the Camcorder. Ella got up shortly after. Mom was up with Calvin even later. Trust me, I didn’t even know he came out. I would have definitely taken over for her so she could get some sleep. Anyway, here are the pictures.

Click on the picture for a large (very large) picture.

Calvin was loving Oliver!

Ella was the first child to hold Oliver. She insisted upon it! She’ll be a big helper!

Monty was excited, but he really wanted it to be a girl.

Calvin really liked Oliver’s feet. When we wrapped them up he cried, so we unwrapped them!

Calvin again holding Oliver. He was showing off for the camera! We didn’t mind!

The night before birth

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

We had a busy busy day. I took the day off to help get stuff ready around the house. We got a lot done. I won’t bore you with the details, suffice it to say we worked all day (and night). It’s now 11:08 pm and we are finally finishing things up. We just checked the camcorder to make sure we have a blank tape. Guess what? We don’t. I’m now downloading one tape to our computer as I type. It will be done in an hour or so. I’m glad we checked now rather than the morning. Charity is doing good. Neither one of us will get any sleep tonight. We’re excited and nervous, so sleep is pretty much out of the question. Good thing cause we’ve got to be to the hospital in 6 hours and 20 minutes now. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get to post some pictures of the baby. If not it will be Thursday for sure. Sleep well!

Just a week early

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Well, the new baby Gasall is keeping us on our toes already.  Today Charity had her final doctors appointment.  Over the weekend she wasn’t feeling the baby move that much.  We contemplated going in, but soon after she felt the baby move so we felt better about it.  She told her doctor about this.  Immediately his jaw dropped.  He setup a stress test for her.  Depending on the outcome of the test he said we were either going to have the baby today or Wednesday.  Well, the test went well, so we are all set for Wednesday.  This is a week earlier than we originally had planned.  She had a C-Section scheduled for Oct. 24.  We just roll with the punches.

In light of the early departure of our child (I’ll let you know what it is as soon as I find out!) I am taking the next 2 days off of work.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, I am planning on helping Charity with anything and everything she wants.  She’s pretty nervous about this (rightfully so!) and wants everything to be in order before Wednesday.  Hopefully I can get us there!

My Mom and Dad are coming tomorrow after Dad is done with work.  The kids are really excited about that.  Mom will be staying through Saturday to watch the kids.  Charity will most likely get out of the hospital on Saturday.  I’ll be staying with her in the hospital at night and then heading to work during the day.  I’ll come back to the hospital after work.  Of course I’ll be stopping home to see the kids (and Mom) as well.  I am taking next week off and then working from home (hopefully!) after that.

For Family Home Evening tonight we talked about the new baby.  I think the kids are really excited about it.  Monty and Ella really want to help out with it.  Monty says he’ll get up with the baby at night and rock and feed it.  I think Mom would like that!  Calvin will keep the baby on it’s toes.  He’ll be poking it’s eyes out and grabbing it’s ears.  For our activity for FHE we went to the bookstore to pick up a baby book and then to target to get diapers and wipes.  Not the normal activity for FHE, but we had a good time being together and preparing for the new addition.

Calvin did have a rough, rough day.  The contractor working on our staircase got the steps on today.  After they left he was playing on them and fell down.  He’s got a big bump on his head, but he lived.  At target, Ella was eating pizza while Calvin was running back and forth on the bench in the food court.  He took one extra step and fell right off.  I’m sure he’ll have a big bump from that one.

Now it’s time to get some sleep so we can get a ton done tomorrow.   I’ll try to post some pictures of our stairs (we aren’t that thrilled with them) and will definitely post pictures of the baby once we get some.
